Birch Hill Update:
Birch Hill (aka Atwood St, behind the Aquatic Centre) is now open once again to vehicle traffic. Re-painting the centre line will be completed soon.
Local engineering consultants Tetra Tech completed the design and project management. Daudet Creek Contracting completed the construction, which took about a month, from mid-September to mid-October. This included a one-week period when City Roads & Drainage and Engineering replaced aging storm infrastructure on the hill.
This section of roadway is now rebuilt to a higher standard than the original and is intended to be a long-term repair. While the slope off the gravel shoulder was built steeper than originally intended due to physical constraints, the City continues to assess this. We will be looking for ways to improve safety for pedestrian users, while also improving aesthetics, next spring. In the meantime, please note the signage on the hill:
- “Share the Road” signs have been posted
- Warning sign for the steep slope reminds pedestrians to use caution while walking up the hill
- Vehicle traffic speed limits are 30 km/hr (existing sign)
Thank you to all involved for another successful hill repair!
