The City of Terrace is governed by an elected Council of seven members who serve for a four-year term. City Council is responsible for local government services and policies, and ensuring the City's resources are used for the benefit and protection of its residents.

City Council FAQs

Council Meetings are held every second and fourth Monday of the month, and start at 7:30 pm in the Council Chambers in City Hall at 3215 Eby Street.

All Council meetings are open to the public, with several ways to participate - virtually or in person. The agenda is posted ahead of time on the Council Portal.

Make sure to check the schedule as some meetings may be rescheduled to Tuesday evening, if the Monday is a holiday.
In order to be considered for a Council meeting agenda, you are required to fill out and return the "Request to Appear as a Delegation" form, which you can fill out online below, print off and fill in on paper, or obtain in person at City Hall. Please return printed forms to the Executive Assistant via email, cityhall@terrace.ca, or drop them off at City Hall.

The agenda is always finalized on Thursday morning, the week prior to the Council Meeting.

Every effort will be made to ensure that someone is in attendance representing the City of Terrace; however, depending on schedules this may not always be possible.

Please do not contact the Mayor and Councilors directly to arrange for their attendance, as this may result in your event not being noted by the Executive Assistant, who is responsible for arranging Council's schedule.

Mayor and Council is responsible for making decisions about, and delivering and paying for services, in the the City of Terrace.

The image below lists what each level of government in our country is responsible for. Federal is the Government of Canada. Provincial is the Government British Columbia. And local is the City of Terrace Municipal Government - Mayor & Council.

It's important to note that while the City of Terrace Mayor & Council may not be responsible for items such as health care, housing, childcare, railways, and much more, they recognize the impacts of these important issues on the community and advocate to the higher levels of government for these items on behalf of the community.

More Council Initiatives

Each term, Council meets to build the Strategic Plan for the City. In January 2023, Council and City staff met to develop the 2023-2026 Corporate Strategic Plan for the City. This plan builds on the work of previous plans and guiding documents and policies of the City.

The Northwest BC Resource Benefits Alliance (RBA) is an association of 21 local governments across the Northwest from Masset to Vanderhoof. Formed in 2014, the RBA includes all member municipalities and electoral areas of the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako, the Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine, and the North Coast Regional District.

The RBA was formed to seek a sustainable funding agreement with the province that ensures more of the revenue generated from the northwest, remains in the region.

On February 22, 2024, during the provincial budget announcement, the Northwest BC Resource Benefits Alliance (RBA) was awarded $250 million over five years (2024 - 2029). Terrace received just under $35 million ($34,445,927) the largest amount of all 21 communities.

This funding will support planning and construction of infrastructure such as roads, water, sewer and other community facilities needed to create liveable communities.

Mayor's Message

Terrace is rich in culture and history. Ts’msyen people have lived here since time immemorial, and our community is steeped in their culture, language, and traditions. You can see northwest coastal art around town in totem poles, murals, and carvings by master carvers, many of whom teach at or graduated from the Freda Diesing School of Northwest Coast Art at Coast Mountain College. You can witness cultural dancing and listen to Sm’algyax, the traditional language of the Ts’msyen, at many of our community events. At nearby Kitselas Canyon National Historic Site, you can learn more about Ts’msyen history in a stunningly picturesque setting.

Explore the mountains we are ringed by through our world-class hiking and mountain biking trails, or on the slopes of nearby Shames Mountain or Onion Lake Cross Country Ski Trails. Visit the many rivers and lakes that surround our community for fishing, swimming, or skating. Tour our vibrant art scene by trying to find all of the murals and artwork created through the Skeena Salmon Arts Festival. Eat lunch at one of our many amazing restaurants, grab a coffee, and shop our unique businesses.

So many people tell me that they came to Terrace for a year and are still here, decades later. Terrace is a magic kind of place, and I am so glad that you are here to experience the magic.
