In late December 2020, he joined as a volunteer firefighter with Terrace Fire Department, while working as the Emergency Program Coordinator for the Kitsumkalum Band.

"I feel grateful to take on the role of Fire Chief and look forward to leading this department with compassion and overall safety of our firefighters and the community,” Brousson said. “I am pleased with the strong working relationship the Terrace Fire Department has with inter-agency first response providers and look forward to continued success as we focus on community safety and well-being."

In addition to Brousson’s robust training in fire suppression and fire leadership, he has a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. He also has experience working in the area of Mental Health and Addictions.

“Joel has proven to be an excellent leader and has the support and confidence of his team and the community,” said City Manager Maggie Arruda. “We are excited to welcome him into his new role.”

Brousson officially started in the Chief position on Monday, December 16, replacing Chad Cooper.

The City would like to thank former Fire Chief Cooper for his excellent work and dedication to his team, the City and Terrace residents during his time as Chief. Cooper started as the City of Terrace Fire Chief in June 2023. Before that, he served in the role of Deputy Fire Chief at the Prince Rupert Fire Department, Fire Chief with the City of Flin Flon’s Fire Department, in Manitoba.

The City of Terrace will aim to fill the Deputy Fire Chief role in the new year.
