An Emergency Warming Centre (EWC) will be open tonight at ‘Ksan Society’s Turning Points Building from 7pm, December 17, until 7am December 18.
Location: ‘Ksan Society’s Turning Points Building – 4444 Lakelse Avenue
Hours: 7PM to 7AM (December 17 – December 18)
Purpose: To provide a safe, warm drop-in space for people who are unable to access safe shelter during extreme weather conditions.
Folks will have access to hot beverages, snacks, washrooms and showers.
This warming centre is a collaborative effort between the City of Terrace, 'Ksan Society, Terrace and District Community Services Society (TDCSS), Kermode Friendship Society, and Gitlaxdax Nisga'a Terrace Society. The centres are supported by Emergency Management and Climate Readiness (EMCR) funding.
Temperature and wind chill expected this evening means weather conditions meet thresholds that allow the City to access this funding, and work with our community partners to open an EWC overnight tonight.
Emergency warming centres are a temporary option to provide a short-term, drop-in, overnight warming space in Terrace for persons experiencing unsheltered homelessness who are unable to access other shelter options; they do not replace existing overnight shelters or other programs already in place throughout the year. Our partnering agencies provide the space and staffing needed to open the EWC when they have the capacity to do so.
The City thanks EMCR and all our partners for providing support during cold-weather events and for all of the support they provide the community.
