Effective at noon on Friday, June 25, 2021, open burning activities are prohibited in the City of Terrace to help reduce the likelihood of human-caused wildfires. The ban applies to the types of fires used for land clearing; it does not include small campfires or fire pits for cooking food. In addition, all current burn permits within the City of Terrace are cancelled and no new permits will be issued. These prohibitions will remain in effect until noon on October 15, 2021, or until the public is otherwise notified.
The current forecast calls for elevated temperatures throughout the weekend, a weather trend that has resulted in BC Wildfire Service prohibiting Category 2 and Category 3 open fires. Current prohibitions apply to all public and private land within the Northwest Fire Centre boundary.
Within Terrace city limits, fire pits in the backyard are permitted for the purpose of cooking food only and must be contained within a non-combustible receptacle made of cement, brick, or metal, and no more than 3 feet in diameter. Only cut, seasoned wood or charcoal is to be burned; yard waste burning is not permitted at any time. Small propane fire pits are also permitted. Campfires are permitted at Ferry Island campsites.
Safety tips:
- Please be considerate of neighbours and do not light fire pits if weather conditions could cause smoke to be a nuisance to others.
- Anyone lighting a fire should be sure to remove flammable debris from around the area.
- Fires should never be left unattended.
- A hand tool or at least 8 L of water should be available nearby to property extinguish the fire.
- Never burn in strong wind conditions.
- A fire must be completely extinguished before leaving it.
