Meet our new firefighters!

This month, we welcomed two new firefighters to the City of Terrace Fire Department: Shayle Prins and Mike Krueger. The addition of firefighters had been discussed beginning last fall as part of the 2024 budget process and the Fire Chief’s recommendation to increase on-duty staffing. Earlier this year, the department transitioned to a 24-hour shift pattern, and the addition of these two new firefighters will help ensure adequate staffing levels are in place for all shifts.

“As Fire Chief, I am delighted to welcome Shayle Prins and Mike Krueger as the newest full-time firefighters of the Terrace Fire Department,” says Fire Chief Chad Cooper. “Their appointments represent a strategic enhancement to our department’s capabilities and readiness. Both Shayle and Mike bring a wealth of knowledge and a robust commitment to public safety that will undoubtedly benefit our community. Welcome aboard, Shayle and Mike. Your dedication to serving and protecting our community is highly valued.”

Let’s meet them:

Shayle Prins brings seven years of experience in the fire service. Born and raised here in Terrace, he’s spent time with BC Wildfire Service with the Firebird Unit Crew, and most recently was a Firefighter / Paramedic with the Kitimat Fire Department. “It’s an incredibly rewarding experience to bring a career home that I learned to love while in service to other communities,” says Shayle. “To strengthen my connection with Terrace, and to work towards earning the trust of my community, is something I look forward to.”

Mike Krueger of Oakville, Ontario, has five seasons with Ontario Wildfire, two seasons with BC Wildfire as a Crew Member and Crew Leader, and four years with the Kimberley Fire Department as a Paid-on-Call Firefighter, among other roles. A graduate with an Advanced Diploma in the Fire Protection Engineering Technology Program at Seneca College in Toronto, Mike moved to Terrace in 2022 for a full-time EMR position with BC Ambulance. “The most rewarding part of joining the Terrace Fire Department is that I am able to make a positive contribution to the community that I live in,” he says. “Serving the residents in Terrace is an honour, and I'm thankful to provide exceptional services to the public with the Terrace Fire Department team.”

Please join us in welcoming Shayle and Mike!
