Reminders to stay cool and safe
- Drink lots of water – even if you don’t feel thirsty.
- Wear sunscreen.
- Sleep in the coolest part of your residence. If it’s cooler outside, sleep outside if you can.
- Do your errands early or late in the day when it’s cooler.
- Never leave children or pets in a hot, parked car.
- Make sure you have lots of fresh water for your pets and that they are in cool locations.
If you need somewhere to cool down:
- Play at the splash park at George Little Park downtown. Hours are 9am to 9pm.
- Go to the air-conditioned Terrace Public Library.
- Visit Volunteer Terrace.
Check on your loved ones
Continuous high temperatures put many vulnerable populations at risk of heat-related illnesses, including the elderly, infants and young children, pregnant women, people with chronic illness, and people experiencing homelessness.
We encourage you to check on neighbours and loved ones who may be unable to leave their homes or whose judgement may be impaired. Remember to also take care of your pets!
Supporting Terrace's vulnerable populations
The City has been planning ahead and working with partners to bolster collective efforts to supporting vulnerable populations.
City Bylaw Officers and Community Safety Officers (CSOs), as well as outreach staff from partner organizations, are walking and driving the streets. They are checking in on the City's unsheltered and vulnerable population, providing water, snacks, sunscreen and support as needed. They are also encouraging people to access cool public spaces such as the George Little Splash Park, the Terrace Public Library and Volunteer Terrace.

As part of a broader community wide response to extreme heat, the City of Terrace works in partnership with community service providers and with funding, as available, from the Ministry of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness (EMCR) to provide Emergency Cooling Centres (ECCs) at times when there are heat warnings.
Although we do our best to provide the space and staff needed to open an ECC at times, space may not be available due to previous bookings and/or staff may not be available for many reasons.
The partnered ECC is just one of the many ways this community works to support our citizens during extreme heat. Many local organizations, including the City, have outreach staff and teams that check the safety of, and provide cooling resources and information about cooling options, to unsheltered and street entrenched persons.
